Episode #15: Dr. Jenna Nitowski, DC: Understanding Chiropractic Care & Strength Training Through A Clinical Coach’s Lens

Dr. Jenna Nitowski, DC: Understanding Chiropractic Care & Strength Training Through A Clinical Coach’s Lens

In this episode of the PRS Podcast, our special guest is Dr. Jenna Nitowski, chiropractor, barbell strength and running coach, in-person and remote clinical coaching business owner, and a graduate of our courses here at PRS.

Jenna discusses her journey to creating a chiropractic practice that bridges the gap between traditional chiropractic care and exercise rehabilitation.

Dr. Jenna shares her insight on:

  1. How her journey as an injured highschool runner led her to seek higher education and a profession integrating exercise and rehabilitation

  2. The difference between traditional and progressive chiropractic care

  3. Why we we shouldn’t rely on x rays or imaging to dictate our care or movement abilities

  4. What spinal manipulation is, how it works, and when it’s appropriate

  5. What the sound that we hear with manipulation is and why it may be painful or feel really good

  6. If it’s OK to get under a barbell with spinal pain or injuries

  7. What you should be doing as a student or practicing clinician to help advance the field of clinical and exercise rehabilitation in physical therapy or chiropractics

  8. Her best pieces of advice for clinicians, athletes, and coaches

As always, our episodes are for athletes, coaches, and clinicians, and Jenne provides a unique perspective on the spine, exercises, and rehabilitation.

Dr. Rori Alter, PT, PRSCC, SSC: [00:02:17] Alright. So, yeah, this is our first podcast interview, so we're super excited to have you on the podcast, but we wanted to bring some experts on the spine into the podcast mix because there are people, well, I would just say the majority of people are fearful of the spine. Doctors say, "don't lift." Physical therapists and chiropractors say don't lift, and they'll blame it on your spine like you have to protect your spine. It's going to hurt your spine. And so I think there is a lot of misconception around the spine and barbell training, pain, and the spine in barbell training. And I also think that there are some changes in the field of physical therapy and chiropractic that we wanted to bring you on the podcast to discuss those things and how you've integrated barbell training into your practice of chiropractic and how you've built a business that isn't just the traditional model of chiropractic care where it's like come every week for the rest of your life to get like a *crack*. So I'll see you next week, you know.

Dr. Rori Alter, PT, PRSCC, SSC: [00:03:32] And how you've also taken barbell coaching into the mix to support your business because do you guys take insurance at your practice?

Dr. Jenna Nitowski-Luu, DC: [00:03:43] We don't, no.

Dr. Rori Alter, PT, PRSCC, SSC: [00:03:44] Neither do we. So and I think there are limitations to an insurance-based model, and there are limitations to a medical model only, you know. So you have a good mix of not insurance of clinical care and ongoing care. So why don't you tell us a little about your athletic and barbell training history, your journey to becoming a more progressive chiropractor who integrates barbell training or strength training into your treatment process, and how you became a business owner? Because you're young and a female, there are not much young female chiropractic or physical therapy practice owners. So tell us a little bit about your journey.
